Discussion: "My Enemies Don't Have Original Ideas, They're Just Haters"
Yesterday this was retweeted by someone with whom I have broken bread (and who knows my political and religious beliefs), someone I believed thought of me as a reasonable person. A person who has stated publicly that they are proud of, and committed to, supporting and encouraging diversity.
Is this the kind of statement you would be comfortable saying about people who disagree with you? Do you think this kind of statement could be made by a thoughtful person, aware of and truly grappling with the complexity of human interactions? Or do you think, as I do, that this kind of statement could only be amplified by someone whose ideas are never challenged? Someone who responds to challenges to their ideas with dogmatic, reflexive self-defense, rather than using those challenges as opportunities to consider their beliefs from different perspectives?
"My enemies don't have original ideas. They just hate mine, and their entire philosophy and belief systems are reflexive responses to my actual, better, original ideas. If my ideas didn't exist, they'd have no thoughts in their heads."
How is this a thing anyone would be proud of saying out loud?
How could anyone who's ever had a real conversation with someone who doesn't share their beliefs think something like this?
It is perhaps no wonder this person wrote me off.
